Treaty of New echota
The Treaty of New Echota was signed by members of the United States Government and representatives of a small Cherokee political unit. The United States Senate ratified the Treaty in 1836 and refused the protests from the Cherokee Nation and without the signature of the main Cherokee chief, John Ross. It was the legal basis for the Cherokee Indian Removal along the Trail of Tears. The terms of the treaty established which the Cherokee Nation would secede all of it's lands to the American Government and move out West past the Mississippi.
